"The tales in this collection are about everyday life with some fantastic elements. An African American mother and daughter confronts a German prisoner of war in one story, while in another a coal miner's gift for braying leads to a war between coal camps. Here are chronicles of a Mexican barber who extracts a ghoulish revenge for being forced to shave the beard of a killer; of the terrible fate that awaits boys who are lured into a dancehall during the Lenten season by the Devil and his beautiful cowgirls; and of an old coal miner who attempts to control his young wife by pretending to be the voice of the Lord. In other stories a lion who is accidentally caught and caged teaches a coal miner a lesson; two crusty cowboys come to understand the purpose of gnats and tumbleweeds and why rattlesnakes have rattles; and the Angel of Death is told to collect Hispanic souls or else. The account of a rootin'-tootin' cowboy and his wife who use a pitch-baby to trap a pesky jack rabbit and a fish story round out this multiethnic collection of tales. Recounted in a lively, humorous style, the stories show how ordinary people managed to conduct dignified and happy lives - with occasional help from the spirit world - in a difficult social and physical environment."--Jacket.

Recognizing that institutional effectiveness is important to both UNDP’s audit and evaluation functions, the Directors of IEO and Office of Audit and Investigations (OAI) undertook the Assessment of UNDP’s Institutional Effectiveness jointly, using both audit and evaluation methods. The UNDP Evaluation Policy and OAI Charter share the same purpose of supporting UNDP through oversight, review of governance, risk management practices and institutional learning. This Assessment report encompasses the joint findings and conclusions of the two offices for presentation to the Executive Board in 2017. The objective of this evaluation is to assess the extent to which policy and organizational measures, including the associated restructuring process, have enhanced or have the potential to enhance UNDP’s ability to deliver higher quality programmes and UNDP’s institutional effectiveness.

This original and compelling study argues against the traditional identification of Arthur as a king in Celtic Britain. Instead, Graham Anderson explores the evidence for two much older figures, known to classical writers as kings of Arcadia and Lydia, over a millenium before.
He shows how these kings can be clearly connected with traditional Arthurian characters and adventure, including an ancient Gawain, a Lady of Shallott, and a predecessor of Excalibur, and shows that the Arthurian universe found in Welsh tales and French romances is already anticipated in these earliest of Arthur
